To the far cove he left alone.
Along the lane. Down to the sea.
Like one hundred times before.

Sharp was the air as he left his home.
Through the dark streets. Down to the sea.
Like one hundred times before.

Past silent doors shut against the chill. Though the stone square. Down to the sea. Like one hundred times before.

Through the town gates and on down the hill. On the worn track. Down to the sea.

Dark was the night. Heavy the clouds.
Cross the farmland. Down to the sea.
Like one hundred times before.

The song from his heart he sang aloud.
Through the old woods. Down to the sea.
Like one hundred times before.

Of the night each year he would walk to the beach. Along the cliff path. Down to the sea.
Like one hundred times before.

For a chance to be heard and a chance to be seen. Across the white sands. Down by the sea. Like one hundred times before.

For he had travelled here like he had before. To atone for his sins on this midnight shore.

Each time he would come here a year to the night with no hope of peace and no end in sight.

To argue the case and admit his dire role. In the court of the ocean. To plead for his soul.

So he begged for his freedom from what he’d become. For his sentence in undeath to be undone.

But the ocean refused to hear his plea and the current dragged him down to his knees.

Midst the waves and the water and deep under the sea.

Like a hundred times before.

Like one hundred times more.
